Christmas Term 2020 - Week 6 Sports Report

Netball

Congratulations and good luck are required this week to four members of our Netball family. At the top end, Emily Cridland and Milenka Soskin have been trialling for Team Bath in the NPL trials. The Netball Performance League is run by England Netball and is the country's premier netball league for U17, U19 and U21 level. Many of the players who have come through the NPL system for Team Bath have gone on to enjoy successful Super League and international careers. The Netball Club is very proud of both players and wishes them luck at their second trial this coming weekend.

Congratulations are also due to two new Shells, Melisa Kose and Paige Davis-McCluskie who have gained places in the County training program. We look forward to watching how both players develop throughout their time at Canford. Well done from the Netball Club and welcome to the Netball family.

Golf

This year’s House Golf competition took place just before half term.

Individually the girls’ competition was won by Charlotte Brook with 37 strokes and the boys’ competition, and also the overall, was won by Adam Reid with 35 strokes.

Second place was hotly contested with three players all shooting 39. It went to countback (ie the total score on holes 7, 8 and 9) which meant James Barker just edged out Charlie Bird by 1 and Felix Wigley came 4th.

The boys’ team competition was another amazingly close affair. With two scores from three counting, Lancaster and Court both scored 78. To decide who won, the third player’s score was used so Tom Holtby’s 53 just beat Max Richards’ 55.

Then to decide 3rd place, three teams tied on 83; Wimborne, Monteacute and School House. Again the third player’s score was the decider so Tom Prest’s 47 won out over Harrison Hill’s 51 and Will Priaulx’s 55.

The girls’ house winners were Beaufort. Well done to all 40+ players who took part.

Hockey

Congratulations to all six of our pupils who were invited to attend England Hockey trials at Millfield School during half term - Georgie Boon, Honoré Cutler, Alicia Hudson, Dill Howell, Ed Schuster-Bruce and Tom Doyle. Once decisions have been made the next stage, if selected, would be the National Age Group Squads (NAGS). A great opportunity for all six to develop their hockey talent further.

Cycling

Over half term the National Cycling Hill Climb Championships were held up Streatley Hill in Berkshire. Canford were represented by Lower Sixth pupil Felix Tuck. Having prepared and trained well over the first half of term using the school watt bikes, Felix set a personal best time by 20 seconds and had an excellent race. His time saw him finishing a very impressive 4th in the U16 event, 15th in the U18 and 112 out of 401 overall.

Canford Sports Department – Team of the Week

See the photos / attachments for the new team of the week. This week the team is made up of those who were performing and representing Canford across the half term period. Can you make next week’s team for your attitude, commitment and performance in the 1st week back?
