Golf – ISGA National Championships

Monday and Tuesday 24th and 25th of April saw the Canford Golf team take their place amongst some schools golf giants in the ISGA National Championships at Formby on the Lancashire coast. Our team of three was led by U6 Charlotte Brook and included two Fourth formers in Leo Vorobyev and Suzy Cribb. Suzy had stepped in late for Felix Wigley who had participated in the qualifying rounds but was unfortunately unavailable for the finals.

The event was a strokeplay competition over the beautiful 36 holes at both Formby and Formby Ladies Golf Clubs which have previously held European Tour events and the English Amateur Championships. The format of the competition meant two scores out of the three players on each day would need to count. Out first on Day , Canford made an outstanding start and when all players had completed their rounds it saw Leo and Charlotte in 2nd and 4th positions individually and Canford one stroke ahead in the team competition from Rossall with Reeds in 3rd a further shot back. Whilst not needing her score to count, Suzy gained a huge amount of experience on a tough course and showed her potential with a number of birdies.

Day 2 saw another brilliant performance from our trio. Charlotte improved again to finish 2nd overall individually and Leo backed with another good round to end 7th and Suzy improved her score from the first day. An inspired Rossall School pairing did manage to edge past us in the team standings but they were the only team to do so. All at Canford are hugely proud of a 2nd place finish in the Nationals. Well done to all three pupils (and Felix) for their achievements and also to Mr Shaw and Miss Eaton for their help in looking after the team up North.

Good luck also goes to Leo who is taking part this weekend in the prestigious Fairhaven Trophy at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lytham St. Annes where the field will include the best junior golfers from a large number of countries.

Fourth former and Sports scholar Reza Seewooruthun as well as being involved in the ‘focus’ sports at Canford has been developing his driving skills in karting. Over three days in early April, Reza practiced and competed in the Rotax E Plate, English Championship, held at the Forest Edge Kart Circuit in Andover.

After the weekend’s racing, Reza was crowned Junior Rotax – English Champion, a title he will hold for one year and which will now allow him to remove his race number “78” from my kart and to display the “E” Plate for all future races in England. A great achievement and we look forward to following Reza’s progress on the track.

The Easter break saw some of our Swimmers in action in both National and Regional competition.

England Junior Squad member Robbie Hemmings was in action at the Summer Senior Nationals which took place at Ponds Forge in Sheffield and included a number of senior Olympians. Competing in all three distances at Backstroke (50, 100 and 200m) Robbie set some excellent personal bests including achieving his main goal of meeting the qualifying standard in the 100m event for the upcoming European Junior Championships in Romania this summer. Fingers crossed selection goes his way!

Freya Coupe was also in action a little closer to home this weekend in the South West Regional Championships. An excellent start to the event saw Freya win Gold in the 14 years 100m Backstroke and Bronze in the 400m Freestyle.

Well done both!!

Congratulations to Ryan Woodford who was selected for and has been playing for the Bath Academy U17’s PDG over the Easter break. Fixtures included a win in a match against Harlequins Academy U17’s at Chippenham RFC.

Hockey – House Competition

Just before the Easter Break the Boys House Hockey tournament took place. In between the lovely sunny spells and the cold, wintry blasts, both events ran smoothly with a healthy level of house spirit, enjoyment, rivalry and skill!

In the Junior competition, School beat Court 1-0 in the first semi, whilst Salisbury beat Monteacute 1-0 in the second semi. School then clinically won 3-0 v Salisbury in the final.

In the senior competition, Court beat Lancaster 3-0 in the first semi. Elsewhere, it was a tale of the penalty shootouts. Monteacute scored a last minute equaliser versus School, before winning 3-2 in the shootout in the second semi, whilst the final saw Court and Monteacute play out an entertaining 2-2 draw, before Court triumphed 2-1 in the ‘sudden death’ phase of the shootout.

Well done to all involved.
