Summer Term 2022 - Week 2 Sports Report

Cricket v Bryanston

Girls’ Hardball v Bryanston

Canford - 137/3

Bryanston – 59 All Out

Izzy Reeve 51 Not Out

Canford welcomed Bryanston for the first fixture of the season. After losing the toss, Canford openers Erin Bruce and Izzy Reeve got off to a great start with a partnership of 76. Izzy reached her half century in 31 balls with ten boundaries. Some tight bowling from the Bryanston change bowlers yielded three wickets and subsequently slowed the run rate, however a partnership of 32 between Delilah Rees and Poppy White got the Canford innings up to a very impressive 137.

In the field Canford put on a dominant display with every bowler showing great control and economy. Emily Von Schirnding (1-3) and Hester Child overcame their nerves and opened the bowling brilliantly. Alice de Laszlo, Jorgia Holtby, Lucy Stephenson, Charlie Howell and Penelope Dirou (1-10) kept the pressure on which led the Bryanston batters to have no option but to try and push the runs, however they came up against an impressive fielding display which achieved six run outs; five being direct hits! The Bryanston innings finished on 59. A special mention must go to Daisy Timberlake who kept wicket for the first time and did so superbly.

Girls’ Softball v Bryanston

The first softball match against Bryanston was a good opportunity to practice the core cricket skills and for some it was their first ever cricket match. We played 14 overs of paired cricket, with Canford dominating both matches, winning convincingly 147 runs to 114. All the girls got a bowl in which was fantastic and Charlotte Parkin was picked as fielder of the match and Sophia Smith batter of the match.

Boys’ 1st XI – National T20 Cup v Bryanston

In our first U18 National cup game for over 6 years Canford won the toss and chose to bat first. Our openers made a steady start on a sticky wicket being watchful we got 27 off 4 overs before Eddie Jack pulled a few short balls away to the fence on debut - then came the turn of James Barker. James played some excellent shots all around the wicket, before turning to his power to launch 12 6s in what was a brutal display of pure striking. James finished on 157* off 62 balls, sharing a 135 run partnership with Dill Howell who hit a brisk 40 on debut.

In the field, Kit Blomfield starred with the ball, taking 3 wickets on debut, before rain stopped play with Bryanston on 61-4 off 11 leading to a big victory for Canford.

Next week sees the group stage continue with Taunton school coming to us.

Congratulations to Lower Sixth pupil Robbie Hemmings on his selection for the British Team for the European Junior Championships which take place in Bucharest, Romania between the 5th and 10th of July. An amazing achievement and we wish Robbie all the best in preparation for that event (including keeping wicket for the Boys’ 1st XI Cricket!!!).
